Cystic Fibrosis Game App

As part of my PhD research we investigated serious games for mobile applications that could be used for adult Cystic Fibrosis patients. There are 2 major parts to this project.

1) The Game: The game design is based on 'Flappy birds', however our app involves the user breathing into a microphone to control the bird moving through obstacles instead of tapping a screen. The app was developed for Android and also includes a questionnaire which will only appear once a day to measure baseline. Once you open the app you are asked to blow for as long and as hard as possible, by doing so the required blow strength to elevate the bird is calibrated to suit the user. This is done once a day. The app was created by You Yuan Tan.

2) The Web Tool: The blow data, questionnaire data and game performance is then analysed by a back end system. The data can be viewed by members of the CF health care team. A SMS alert is sent to the user to contact their health care team if  1) they record an increase in sputum, 2) a decrease in baseline, 3) or continuous bad game performance. The parameters of these alerts are customisable by the health care team members through the web tool. The message to appear in the alert can also be customised. The web tool system was created by me.

The App is focused towards adult CF patients and the design focuses on not appearing clinical so as not to act as a constant reminder of their disease. The web tool is focused towards the health care team and is clear and simple to use so that it can be used with ease.
